In 2002 the THIERRY Graduate School of Leadership of Belgium launched a pioneering focal area in its masters in leadership program: Environmental Leadership. Surnamed TERRA, it was the world's first MA degree-program offered online in that specific field of study. Having proven its value and own sustainability, the flagship TERRA program is since 2014 symbolically embodied by i2LN, the humans-and-nature joint-initiative of THIERRY and the INSIL International Higher Institute for Leadership of France. In the frame thereof all of the Environmental Leadership courses and program completion requirements now take place at INSIL.

Three curriculum options are possible, as highlighted further below. Other useful information includes the program admission requirements and tuition fee levels. For further details or to request an application form, contact us.

1. Masters Degree program (120 ECTS)

The international 'TERRA' masters program is offered by INSIL in a distance learning mode  for persons residing around the world (self-paced and e-coached mode, or else the quasi-group mode [1]), and with the possibility of attending a blended learning mode (with residencies or one-day seminars) for persons in Western Europe specifically. The masters curriculum, composed of 12 course unit requirements, is divided into three phases, each of which is capped by, respectively, a project paper, a final paper, and the master's thesis. While aligning with a professional project or initiative of the student, the completion of each phase leads to the awarding of, successively, the Graduate Certificate in Environmental Leadership, then the Diploma in Applied Leadership, and finally the Master of Arts degree in Leadership, with a special focus on Environmental Leadership. The entire program requires 2 years of study in full-time distance learning, and up to 3.5 years part-time.

2. Special Certificate Graduate program (47.5 ECTS)

The graduate certificate program by INSIL is in e-coached distance learning, self-paced, or group [1] mode, and consists of the first five courses from the masters curriculum, plus a project paper. The completion of each course requirements generates transferable course credits. Upon completion of the curriculum the graduate is awarded the Certificate in Environmental Leadership. The certificate program takes less than a year (full-time) to complete, or up to 2 years if attended part-time combined with employment.

3. PhD in Leadership, with a focus on Environmental Leadership  (180 ECTS)

As of 2017 there is also a doctoral program specialization in Environmental Leadership, at INSIL. For programmatic and historical background details, visit the specific PhD-section on the THIERRY website.

[1]  The quasi-group mode is not an online group or e-class. Rather, it is for participants who know each other sufficiently well (colleagues, project team members, association fellows, ...), and who have the opportunity of motivating one another as in a team towards individual course completions, while possibly (not necessarily) maintaining a more or less common pace of study (if simultaneous program-start), and who possibly cooperate towards a conjoint project paper and/or final paper, or otherwise individually. The master's thesis however remains an individual undertaking.
