prior page  " Many foresee this 21st century to be one of, mildly stated, continuously straining life environments, and at all levels of our worldwide societies. Changes will increase exponentially in the decades ahead, and the manageability of local, regional, and global factors will be highly complex".

On establishing future emerging needs  (new programmatic focus, as of 2012)

Anticipating the effects of the exponential  factor that will precipitate the timing, occurrence, and combination of certain impacts of global warming in the future, and those impacts to accumulate with other societal challenges, the school's TERRA curricula will, as of 2012, be specifically geared towards the leadership of impact planning and management, including that of envisioned scenarios as well as unplanned events (crises). The mainstream or original TERRA curricula that focus primarily on forms of prevention, will be enhanced by the new focus.

About the programme and its audience ("historic" programme focus)

The TERRA programmes, sometimes called our "green leadership" or "blue marble" leadership programmes, resulted from the merger of domains of leadership studies and practice, with those of  environmental studies. In its discipline of study our programme was the first, a world premier. Launched in 2002 it was the only such programme to be offered by means of the internet, a distance education for persons around the globe.

Identifying educational needs: the poignant realties

Environmental leadership, or leadership with a very high concern for the natural environment, should be on each leader’s agenda, it should be part of the leader's vision and organisational aims to start with. That is what we may hope for, but the reality is different. Several times per year news reaches us about a major catastrophe somewhere in the world, in our global backyard shall we say. Not to mention the “lesser” events, the “smaller” environmental cases, occurring every day, every minute, somewhere else in the world, if not within short distance of our own home's doorsteps. What has increased in recent decades, and what will continue to expand in the coming years and decade?.. The number, the scope, the size, and the interlacing of environmental situations and crises of all sorts and natures. Those are calls for forms of "rescue" by environmental crisis leaders and teams, the training or grooming of which fully aligns with our institution’s mission and role.

Some of the steps that are of importance include the process of providing education or training in, for example, environmental awareness development; natural resource and waste management; and ethical conduct and organisational expansion. Furthermore, the need for shared leadership, across disciplines and sectors, as well as the role highly effective leaders and their teams play in that respect, are at the forefront of the realities emerging -everywhere-in the world.

Expected background and aims of TERRA participants

The TERRA is intended for executives, engineers, lawyers, advisors, scientists, government officials, business consultants, environmental officers, educators, NGO staff,... who are or will be active in the environmental field and have the courage and determination to take initiatives, and to lead people in the successful achievement of, for instance,  intra-company, community, inter-sector, and societal environmental projects.

Our graduate school has widened the spectrum of its environmental leadership courses and programmes. Initially offered at graduate and postgraduate levels, the TERRA Certificate programmes are now available for persons who have completed secondary school education only. Each person can benefit  from the learning, each person can contribute in leading for the environment, our shared global environment.
